He was born on January 17, 1945 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. His father Jan
Nisar Akhtar was a renowned Urdu poet and film lyricist. His mother Safia
Akhtar was a teacher and a writer. His brother Salman Akhtar is a
psychoanalyst as well as a poet.
He married Shabana Azmi
, the daughter of famous poet, Kaifi Azmi on December 9, 1984.
Shabana is an Indian film actress as well
as a social activist.
He was honored with the IIFA Best Lyricist Award for the song Main Agar
Kahoon from the Hindi film
Om Shanti Om (2007) on June 08, 2008.

And how u defined the "main-stream" !!! only by and bad incident was occured in gujarat !!!
Hindus also suffered much in riots(please check local news paper not TV channel) but we are not thinking such a way that muslims are not secular (do u know the meaning of "secullarisum" is jinnah was secullar - read the hestory jinnah was by born hindu but he was convert after 15 years!!! was he true muslim...... he was because he thought only for muslims not for india)

Nanavati said, that the courts are doing their justice and nothing wrong has happened in the last 5 years. Its naive at best to suggest that justice has been taking its natural coarse in Gujrat and that the minorities still do not live in constant fear and threat.
Tehelka has exposed that the people burnt at Godhra were a bunch of bullies and hooligans; the fire was set from inside the train and the muslims arrested for setting fire were falsely implicated. In contrast 5 to 10 ten thousand muslims were raped, plundered and massacred with active complicity of the Govt. The mainstream guratis joined in freely plundering shops and voting Modi to power twice. Mainstream indians are still in denial and trying to equate what happened at Godhra with the ethnical cleansing in gujrat !!! | |

Though i belong to minority community I appriciate views of Mr. Nanavati. If his views were implemented by our political leaders during 60 years of our indipendence, there would not have been any need to discuss this issue today. What ever our political leaders have done so far minorities with the help of people like Mr.Javed is only for Votes for minorities in the election. I thought Mr. javed is real Muslim, beliving in secularism and being among the main stream Indians, would do something good about the community but NO we are disappointed. I have seen secular Indians talking in favour of minority communities and for their betterment. But not a single minority person speaking in favour of Hindus or Sikhs facing problems and torture in various parts of this country. Devang was asked about muslims and thats what he spoke about. Not sure what triggered Mr. Akhtar other then his bias against the rich and in specific Gujaratis. He was in total denial that majority of the muslim population in India is yet to be part of the main stream. TOI should reconsider having such a biased individual on a panel judging future leaders.
Every so called secular is willing to keep brining up Gujarat riots without mentioning the innocent victims that were burnt alive in the train by Muslims OR the hundreds dead in the bomb lasts across India. | |

Listeners, I for one, more often than not admire him for his zeal and his articulativeness and rarely for his point. Particularly on issues related to secularism, relegion etc. I find him strangely cocky and way too arrogant for a man who was to be that successful a professional. It's an irony that presides over on most discussions related to democratic rights and/or secularism when his views smell of autocratic opinionism and elitist forgetfulness in matters related to relegious attrocities. His opinion, for one, about Mr Nanavati in an episode of Lead India, was - Nanavati should have specificly mentioned that whoever committed the rapes and plunders in post-Godhra riots are not members of mainstream India. What kind of secularism is that? If Mr Nanavati needs to mention that, why doesn't he need also to mention about those who committed attrocities against the Sikhs in 1982 riots all over India or on those who ignited the bogey full of karsevaks in Godhra that sparked the riot in Gujrat in the first place.
