Abhas
Kumar Ganguli, popularly known as Kishore Kumar, was a well-known Indian
playback singer and an actor. He had developed his own style of singing and
was well-known for his yodeling style which became his trademark. He was
born on August 04, 1929 in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. His father Kunjalal
Ganguli was an advocate. His two bothers, Ashok Kumar and Anoop Kumar were
also well-known Indian film actors.
Kumar started his cinema career as a chorus
singer in Bombay Talkies. His first film as an actor was Shikari (1946). His
first film as a hero was Andolan (1951). He became popular as a comic hero
with Hindi films like New Delhi (1956), Aasha (1957), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958),
Jhumroo (1961), Half Ticket (1962), Padosan (1968) etc.
Kumar married four times. His first wife was
Ruma Guha Thakurta. Their marriage lasted from 1950 to 1958. He married
well-known Indian film actress Madhubala in 1961. After her death, he
married Yogeeta Bali, also an Indian film actress. Their marriage lasted
from 1976 to 1978. Later, he married Leena Chandavarkar. He had two sons
Amit Kumar and
Sumit Kumar.
He holds the record for most number of Filmfare
Awards won for Best Male Playback Singer.
