 Udit Narayan is a well known Bollywood singer. He was born
on December 1, 1960 in Saptari, Nepal. His father Hare Krishna Jha was a farmer.
Udit studied at Kunauli Bazaar and Ratna Laxmi Campus in Kathmandu, Nepal. Udit started his career by singing Maithli and Nepali folk songs for Kathmandu Radio Station. He worked for Kathmandu Radio Station for close to eight years. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu offered him a music scholarship to study classical music at Bhartiya Vidhya Bhavan in Mumbai. He came to Mumbai in 1978 and started learning classical music.
He got his first singing break from music director Rajesh Roshan with the film Unees Bees (1980) in which he got an opportunity to sing with Mohammad Rafi. He became popular with the song “Papa Kehte Hain” from the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). The song established him as a distinctive and talented singer, as well as winning him the Filmfare Best Male Playback Award.
He became one of the leading playback singers in the Indian film industry. He has sung playback vocals for various Bollywood films like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995), Rangeela (1996), Raja Hindustani (1996), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Dil Se (1998), Lagaan (2001), Swadesh (2004),
Partner (2007) etc.
In addition to singing he has also acted in some Nepali films like Kusume Rumal, Pirati etc. He has won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Award 5 times. He has also won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer 3 times for films like Lagaan, Swadesh and Chhote Chhote Sapne
He married Deepa Narayan, a Nepali singer in 1985. The duo recorded an album together called Dil Deewana. His son
Aditya Narayan is a Bollywood actor, singer and dancer. He has acted as a child artist in various Hindi movies.

Udit has sung several songs in Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Oriya, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and other languages. He has also released several pop albums of his own. He was one of the judges for the third season of the
Indian Idol, a popular singing competition on Sony Entertainment Television channel. |
