The Filmfare Awards ceremony is one of the oldest film events for Hindi films in India. Often referred to as “Indian Oscars”, the awards were introduced in 1954 by the Indian film magazine Filmfare. A dual voting system, where both the public and a committee of experts can vote was developed in 1956. Since then, the awards have been issued every year, except 1986 and 1987. The awards honor the best of popular work of the previous year. The first Filmfare awards function was held on March 21, 1954 where only five awards were presented, which were – • Best Film – Do Bigha Zameen (1953) • Best Director - Bimal Roy • Best Actor – Dilip Kumar for his performance in the film Daag (1952) • Best Actress – Meena Kumari for her performance in the film Baiju Bawra (1952) • Best Music Director – Naushad for his music in the film Baiju Bawra (1952) As of 2005, the award categories have been increased which are now as follows: Best Movie Best Director Best Actor Best Actress Best Supporting Actor Best Supporting Actress Best Villain Best Comedian Best Male Debut Best Female Debut Best Music Director Best Lyricist Best Male Playback Singer Best Female Playback Singer Critics Award (Best Movie) Critics Award Best Performance (M/F) Lifetime Achievement Award Superstar of Millennium Award Power Award Special Performance Award Sony Scene of The Year RD Burman Award for New Music Talent Raj Kapoor Award Best Art Direction Best Action Best Cinematographer Best Editing Best Choreography Best Story Best Screenplay Best Background Score Best Dialogue Best Sound Recording       The 53rd Fair One Filmfare Awards 2007, which recognize the excellence in cinema, was open for nominations and voting. Nominations from the public for Ten award categories were invited till January 15, 2008. The awards were for films released between January 01, 2007 to December 31, 2007. Fifty percent weightage was given to the peoples’ choice and an equal weightage was given to the judgment of a specially appointed panel of judges. The award ceremony was held on February 23, 2008 in Mumbai. The ceremony was attended by top Bollywood stars and had a vast line up of performances. It was telecast on Sony Entertainment Television channel on March 02, 2008.
