The league is run and managed by a separate Governing body which comprises the following members:

Lalit Modi
Niranjan Shah
Dr. F. Abdullah
I. S. Bindra
Chirayu Ameen
M.P. Pandove
Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi
N. Srinivasan
Arun Jaitly
Rajeev Shukla
Ravi Shastri
Sunil Gavaskar
Shashank Manohar

The first season of the Indian Premier League was hosted by India. It commenced on April 18, 2008, and ended on June 1, 2008 with the victory of the Rajasthan Royals against Chennai Super Kings in the final at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.

The 2009 Indian Premier League season, abbreviated as IPL 2, was the second season of the Indian Premier League. The tournament was hosted by South Africa and scheduled between April 18 and May 24, 2009. The matches of IPL 2 was telecast live on Set Max channel. IPL 2 was expected the second biggest cricket tournament in the world, after the Cricket World Cup.

Concerns were raised in India that the tournament was the prime target of terrorists. Because the second season of the IPL coincided with multi-phase 2009 Indian General Elections, India's ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) refused to commit security by Indian paramilitary forces. As a result, the BCCI decided to host the second season of the league outside India.

Initially England and South Africa were considered the front-runners to host the league. South Africa was chosen as the venue primarily due to concerns over England's weather. On March 24, 2009, the BCCI officially announced that the second season of the IPL will be held in South Africa. Though India did not host the second season, the format of the tournament was same as the 2008 season format. All the 59 matches of the second season held as per schedule.

The league featured eight teams. Each team played twice against each other. Each team had a pool of 17 players of whom, four were international and four from the Under-19 level or from the catchment area where the team was based.

The league works in a similar pattern to Britain’s English Premiership League where clubs are the franchises of BCCI and players of the said clubs are sold and purchased like any other professional club. All the matches are played under the rules and regulations of ICC.

The eight teams and winning bidders for each team were as follows:
Bangalore Royal Challengers :
Dr. Vijay Mallya and UB Group
Kolkata Knight Riders :
Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri Khan, Juhi Chawla
 and Jai Mehta
Delhi DareDevils :
GMR Holdings
Mumbai Indians :
Mukesh Ambani and
Reliance Industries Limited
Chennai Super Kings :
India Cements and N. Srinivasan
Deccan Chargers :
Deccan Chronicle
Rajasthan Royals :
Emerging Media Group and Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra
Kings XI Punjab :
Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Karan Paul and Mohit Burman

The player auction was held on February 6, 2009 in Goa. There was a two-million dollar cap for team buying at the auction.

The match schedule of 2009 Indian Premier League was as follows:

moneyspinner
IPL (Idiot Players League) worth nothing. It is only adding cricketers pockets (coffins) bulging that too tax free (I thi nk) BCCI is also dancing to the tunes of IPL functionaries. Shame on India. ICC should bann the IPL once for all which is benefitting a few persons and definitely not CRICKET

A Matter of Priorities
Linesh,

For what it may be worth to you, all of us here at JeetegaKaun have been totally engrossed with and overworked even, expanding the coverage of the current Loksabha Elections taking place in our country and that has left us with little time to cover other events/contests including IPL 2.

Now, in our books, the General Elections rate a lot higher than the game of Cricket. You may have a different opinion on this, but you'll never convince us of that.

Anyway, we've now rolled out a much more expanded coverage of IPL 2 and we shall continue to update and expand it further as time permits.

Make the most of it and enjoy!
