Miss India U.S.A beauty pageant, founded by Dharmatma Saran, is produced by the India Festival Committee (IFC) based in New York. The first Miss India U.S.A pageant was started in 1980. Various groups and organizations in the major cities of U.S.A were contacted to start Indian pageants in various states and send the winner to New York to compete for Miss India U.S.A. The pageant was a huge success and since then it has been acclaimed as "the most glamorous Indian function" in USA. Many of the past winners of Miss India U.S.A pageant have made their name in the Indian and American movies, television and the modeling world. The contestants of the pageant are girls of Indian origin, between the age of 17 to 27, unmarried and living in the U.S.A. The pageant consists of four segments - Evening Gown, Indian Dress, Talent and Question/Answer. The Twenty Sixth Annual Miss India U.S.A 2007 was held on December 28, 2007, at Royal Albert’s Palace, Fords, New Jersey. The event featured performance by the Punjabi rapper Bohemia. The panel of judges included Fareisa Joemmanbaks (Suriname), the Miss India Worldwide 2007 and Sapna Sehravat (Canada), the second runner up of Miss India Worldwide 2007. Ayushka Singh was the winner of the 2006 Miss India U.S.A pageant. Richa Gangopadhyay, a 21-year-old Michigan student, was crowned with the Miss India U.S.A 2007 title on December 28, 2007. She will represent U.S.A at the 17th annual Miss India Worldwide Pageant on February 23, 2008 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Nisha Multani (New York) was the first runner-up and Nisha Palvia (Georgia) was the second runner-up.
