Aishwarya
Rai is an Indian film actress. She is the wife of Indian film actor
Abhishek Bachchan and daughter-in-law of well-known Indian film
actor
Amitabh Bachchan and actress Jaya Bachchan.
She was born on November 01, 1973 in Mangalore, Karnataka. Her father
Krishnaraj Rai is a marine biologist and her mother Vrinda Rai is a writer.
Her elder brother Aditya Rai is in the merchant navy.
Aishwarya finished her schooling from Arya Vidya Mandir in Mumbai. She
attended the Jai Hind College and Ruparel College, also in Mumbai.
Aishwarya started her career as a model. She participated and secured second
position in the 1994 Miss India pageant. Later, she won the 1994 Miss World
title. She also won the Miss Photogenic award in 1994.
Aishwarya started her acting career with the Tamil film Iruvar (1997). She
debuted in Bollywood with Bobby Deol as her co-star in the film Aur Pyaar Ho
Gaya (1997). Her third film was a Tamil film called Jeans (1998), for which
she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award (South). She became popular with
Hindi films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Taal (1999). She won the
1999 Filmfare Best Actress Award for the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. She
had a supporting role in the hit film Mohabbatein (2000). She has acted in
various Hindi films such as Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke (1999), Hamara Dil Aapke
Paas Hai (1999), Josh (1999), Albela (2001), Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin (2001),
Dil Ka Rishta (2003), Kuch Naa Kaho (2003), Khakee (2003), Kyun Ho Gaya Na
(2004), Raincoat (2004), Shabd (2005) etc.
Aishwarya won the 2003 Filmfare Best Actress Award for the film Devdas
(2002). She attended the Canes Film Festival in 2002 and was a member of the
Jury at Cannes in 2003. She has also acted in a Bengali film called Chokher
Bali (2003).
Her first foreign film was Bride and Prejudice (2004). Later, she acted in
the foreign film The Mistress of Spices (2005). She attended the closing
ceremony of 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. She became popular with
the Hindi song “Kajra Re” from the film Bunty Aur Babli (2005).
Her two films
Dhoom 2 and Umrao Jaan were released in
2006. Her first release in 2007 was the Hindi film
Guru.
Her second film Provoked was released in April 2007. She had also acted in
an American film called The Last Legion (2007).
She married
Abhishek Bachchan, an Indian film actor on
April 20, 2007 in a private ceremony. The couple got engaged on January
14, 2007.
