Sania Mirza is a star Indian tennis player. She was born on November 15, 1986 in Mumbai to Imran and Nasima Mirza. Her father is a sports journalist.
Sania completed her primary education in Hyderabad. She began playing tennis at the age of six. Her father was her first coach. Initially, she started playing game at the Sinnet Tennis Academy in Hyderabad. She has also learnt the professional game at Ace Tennis Academy in USA.
Sania won four gold medals in the 2003 Afro –Asian Games for Women's singles, Mixed doubles (with Mahesh Bhupathi), Women's doubles and Women's team events (with Rushmi Chakravarthy). She won the 2003 Wimbledon Championships Girls' Doubles title with Alisa Kleybanova of Russia and became the youngest Indian and the first Indian woman to win a junior Grand Slam title. She became the first Indian woman to capture a WTA tour title after wining the 2004 Hyderabad Open doubles along with Liezel Huber. She got a wild card entry to the 2005 Australian Open and created history by becoming the first Indian woman to enter the third round of a Grand Slam tournament. She lost in the 3rd round to eventual champion Serena Williams. She became the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title defeating Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine in the Hyderabad Open Finals on February 12, 2005. She was named the WTA's Most Impressive Newcomer for the year 2005.
Sania debuted in Wimbledon Championships Singles in 2005 and won her first match after defeating Akiko Morigami of Japan. She had reached the quarter-finals of 2005 Dubai Tennis Championships after defeating Svetlana Kuznetsova. In the 2005 US Open she was defeated in the 4th round by Maria Sharapova and in 2005 Japan Open she reached the semi-finals of women’s singles and doubles. She was defeated in the finals of 2005 Forest Hills Women’s Tennis Classic held in New York. She won the 2006 Bangalore Open doubles with Liezel Huber.
In the 2006 Doha Asian Games she won the silver medal in the women’s singles category and the gold medal in the mixed doubles with Leander Paes.
She was honored with the Arjuna Award (2005) and Padma Shri Award (2006) by the Government of India.
