Economic Times, Acer India & Intel Technology India Pvt. Ltd instituted the Smart Workplace Awards to recognize offices that are smart. The awards had been instituted with an objective of creating a national level competition for offices in India. About Economic Times: The Economic Times is a leading English-language financial / economic newspaper in India. It is owned and managed by Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. (The Times Group). It was founded in 1961. Its main content is based on the Indian economy, share prices, prices of commodities as well as other matters related to finance. Rahul Joshi is the editor of the newspaper. About Acer India: Acer is a Taiwanese multinational electronics manufacturer. Its product lineup includes computers, laptops, PDAs, servers, LCD TVs, cameras etc. Acer India, the Indian subsidiary of Acer Inc, came into existence on September 09, 1999. It is headquartered at Bangalore. About Intel Technology India: Intel is a US based manufacturer of microprocessors and integrated circuits. It was established in 1968. It manufactures motherboard chipsets, network cards, graphic chips, Bluetooth chipsets, processors and other devices related to communications and computing. Intel Technology India Pvt. Ltd. is a subsidiary of Intel Corporation. It is also headquartered at Bangalore. The awards were targeted at organizations across following major cities in India:   Delhi Mumbai Pune Chandigarh Ahmedabad Bangalore Chennai Coimbatore Hyderabad Cochin Kolkata     The award categories were based on the following criteria:   Size of an Organization (Small, Medium, Large) Six Verticals   Financial Services Industrial Markets Consumer Markets Infrastructure Information, Communication & Entertainment Other Services

The award was open only to companies with registered establishment in India. The entries were categorized as small, medium or large on basis of number of employees and were also classified based on the six verticals. The jury members included experts of respective verticals from various organizations and independent members from different fields such as human resources, architecture etc. It also included members of the following two organizations:   Times Group PricewaterhouseCoopers The evaluation team selected entries on the basis of a questionnaire and other supporting documents submitted by the participants. The evaluation team also visited the offices for inspection and validation of the relevant information provided by the participants. The award ceremony was held on July 17, 2008 in Mumbai.
