Car of The Year Awards is a program initiated, organized and conducted by
automotive journalists from all over the world. The awards are administered
by a non-profit association under the guidance of a Steering Committee of
distinguished automotive journalists from Asia, Europe, and North America.
The awards recognize and reward automotive excellence on a global scale.
The awards were created in March 2003 and were officially launched in
January 2004. The first Steering Committee was established in January 2004
in Detroit, USA. The World Car head office is based in Toronto, Canada. Each
vehicle is rated and evaluated in terms of overall merit, value, safety,
environmental responsibility, emotional appeal and significance.
Audi A6 won the 2005 World Car of The Year Award. The 2006 World Car award
was won by BMW 3-Series while 2007 World Car award was won by Lexus LS460.
The fifth World Car of The Year Awards 2008 will be held on March 20, 2008.
Applications and nominations for World Car of The Year Awards 2008 were

The S400 BlueHybrid, a mild hybrid powered by M-B’s 3.5-liter V-6, boasts a lithium-ion battery co-developed with supplier Continental and described by Daimler R&D boss Thomas Weber as “a crucial breakthrough.”

Unlike Lexus’s LS600hL, the S400 is not aimed at the performance market. Instead, it uses its hybrid drivetrain solely for the traditional aim of fuel efficiency. Mated in the style of a mild hybrid with a 20-hp electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, the V-6 will turn off while the car is stationary and kick back on when the driver wants the car to move. Under braking, the batteries are charged. The electric motor can’t propel the S400 on its own but assists in acceleration.
The compact lithium-ion battery module is far more powerful than conventional nickel-metal hydride batteries. It is integrated in the car’s cooling system to ensure optimal operating temperature.
BMW seemed miffed at the announcement, with executives pointing at the joint hybrid-vehicle alliance between BMW and Daimler. But this particular battery is a Mercedes development, and the carmaker holds 25 patents on it.

With internal combustion and electronic wizardry working together to produce 295 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, the S400 is capable of a 0-to-62-mph sprint in a claimed 7.3 seconds and will pull to a governed 155 mph–all while delivering 30 mpg on the European cycle (up from 23 mpg) in S-class comfort. Additionally, the S400 packages all the hybrid equipment under the hood, so neither passenger room nor cargo space suffers for the driver’s conscientiousness.
Eur ope will get this hybrid in 2009, and a Mercedes spokesman confirmed that it will be offered in the U.S. later–we believe in 2010. If 30 mpg is not enough for you, and you can’t picture yourself in a Prius, start hoping Mercedes offers the upcoming and even thriftier S300 BlueTec diesel hybrid outside Europe. | | | Welcome to | | | | We hope you have fun reading and sharing views at JeetegaKaun. | | Why not Invite Your Friends to read and share their views too? | | | | | | sentylic (New Yord, United States) | | 1 year ago ( 2008-12-14 07:25:53 ) | | http://www.iarticles.info/ | | Car|Laptop|Electronics Review Preview Connecting | 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid
Like the S400 hybrid, the ML450 hybrid uses a gasoline V-6 producing 275 horsepower, but whereas the S400 is a simple mild hybrid incapable of moving under electrical power alone, the ML450 is a more complex two-mode hybrid that will scoot along in stop-and-go traffic or around the parking lot on electric power only. Thanks to that technology, the ML450 hybrid manages up to 31 mpg, better than even a conservative driver could expect to see in a Honda CR-V.
The S400 and ML450 hybrids go on sale in Europe in 2009 and will come to the U.S. as 2010 models.

BlueTec Hybrids
Starting in 2010, Mercedes will begin to roll out BlueTec hybrids combining clean-diesel and hybrid technologies with a seven-speed automatic transmission for what Mercedes claims will be the best fuel economy of any vehicle in each model’s class.
The 2010 E300 BlueTec hybrid will team a 200-hp, 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, putting out 354 pound-feet of torque, with a 20-hp electric motor for performance similar to what we recorded in an E320 BlueTec while it delivered up to a Prius-like 46 mpg.
The same powertrain-and-hybrid combo is destined for an S-class sedan in 2010 and, later, a C-class sedan. According to Mercedes, the C-class will manage a 7.2-second 0-to-60 jaunt and be capable of 51 mpg.

In the heavier S-class, Mercedes’ AdBlue urea-injection system will be added to kill exhaust pollutants so the car can meet the strictest European and U.S. emissions standards. Mercedes claims the S-class will be good for a 0-to-62 sprint of 8.4 seconds, a top speed of 150 mph, and 44 mpg. Later versions of the S-class BlueTec hybrid will see at least the addition of a 241-hp V-6 in an S400 BlueTec hybrid and possibly other engines or hybrid modules for varying levels of performance and efficiency. Testing is under way on other combinations, but no further commitments have been made. No word yet from Mercedes on whether any BlueTec hybrids will be visiting North America.
